The class of 2001, as elected by the membership of the Baseball Reliquary from a ballot consisting of fifty eligible candidates, includes Jim Bouton, Leroy “Satchel” Paige, and Jimmy Piersall.
The Induction Day ceremony will be held at the Donald R. Wright Auditorium in the Pasadena Central Library, 285 East Walnut Street, Pasadena, California. Renowned jazz songwriter and pianist Dave Frishberg (composer and performer of such classics as “I’m Hip,” “Blizzard of Lies,” “My Attorney Bernie,” “Van Lingle Mungo,” “Dodger Blue,” and “The Dear Departed Past”) will deliver the Keynote address, eschewing the podium for the comfort of the piano stool to perform a selection of his baseball songs.
Another highlight of the ceremony will be the unveiling of the 2001 Inductee plaques. Jim Bouton will personally attend from his home in Massachusetts to accept his induction. Mr. Bouton will be introduced by Albert Kilchesty, the Baseball Reliquary’s Archivist and Historian. Warren Paige, the youngest of Satchel Paige’s eight children, will attend from his home in Kansas City, Missouri to accept his late father’s induction on behalf of the Paige family. Mr. Paige will be introduced by Amy Essington, a Negro Leagues historian and Doctoral student in American History at Claremont Graduate University, Claremont, California. Jimmy Piersall’s induction will be accepted by his stepson, Robert Jones, a Hollywood-based screenwriter and head of Deadwood Productions.
